Don’t put feds in charge of the Internet

Fans of the TV show “24” are enjoying yet another exciting season, this one featuring an early plotline in which terrorists hack into America’s vital computer infrastructure and foster panic, death and destruction.

Our real-life leaders in Washington seem to view such threats as not so far-fetched. Two senators have proposed creating a tamer, real-life Jack Bauer in the form of a new “cybersecurity czar” and giving the federal government unprecedented control over America’s Internet traffic.

But there is little reason to believe that putting the federal government in charge will improve the overall safety of America’s digital infrastructure while also protecting our online privacy.
