Twitter shows very high rate of user churn

Twitter may be growing in popularity but it has a hard time keeping users according to new data from Nielsen Online.

The company reports that interest in Twitter is growing rapidly, with the web site getting seven million hits in February, compared to less than half a million in February 2008. However, over 60 per cent of users abandon the service after a month or less.

“Twitter’s audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month’s users who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent,” David Martin, Nielsen Online’s vice president of primary research, said in a blog posting. “For most of the past 12 months, pre-Oprah, Twitter has languished below 30 percent retention.”
