Iran blocks Facebook as election looms

Iran has blocked access to Facebook after thousands of young supporters of Mir- Hossein Moussavi, a leading presidential hopeful, began using the social networking internet site to promote his campaign.

Although it is not unusual for Iranian authorities to filter political, social and sexual websites they deem anti-revolutionary or immoral, the ban on Facebook comes at a sensitive time when reformists complain about having limited access to official media.

Thousands of supporters of Mr Moussavi have been using Facebook to encourage other Iranians to vote for him, and to unseat president Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad. ¡§The filtering is certainly because of the election after the supporters of Mr Moussavi used Facebook as a channel to exchange views and got an upper hand compared to other candidates,¡¨ said Behrad Beheshti, the head of a Moussavi election centre in Isfahan.
